A 15-year-old girl student of Olumawu School Abuja has emerged winner of the national Women in Energy and Economic Sustainability Initiative Essay Competition, for young students of energy.

Miss Angel Mbaya, who became the overall winner of the 1st edition of the Women in Energy and Economic Sustainability Initiative, National Essay Competition for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Girls in Renewable Energy.

The competition was organised by the Women in Energy Economic Sustainability Initiative, in commemoration of the 2023 International Day of The Girl Child, with the theme, “How Women and Girls can actively participate in the clean energy sector as change agents”, was organized for Girls in Science, (STEM).

While commending the organisers, Angel said: “I entered the competition with a desire to see a change for girls in the energy sector which has been dominated by men. Writing this essay wasn’t easy for me, because of the need to balance my midterm school work and house chores. I feel ecstatic. I feel that my voice is heard and I have made an impact on other girls.”

In her remarks, the President, Women in Energy and Economic Sustainability Initiative, Engr. Nkechi Okenwa. urged the winners not to rest on their oars but to give more attention to education.

Okenwa said that the competition has a good record number of entries from girls in Senior Secondary Schools around the country.

Three winners emerged following rigorous evaluation by our expert panel of judges. The 1st place winner and recipient of a N100,000 and a Solar Lantern, Ms Angel Myra Mbaya 15 year old, is a student of Olumawu School Abuja.

Miss Evelyn James of Deeper Life High School, Abuja, emerged 2nd place winner and recipient of N50,000 and a Solar Lantern.

While, Miss Chizitara Ogbonnaya of Danbo International School, Abuja, came in 3rd place and is the recipient of N30,000 and a Solar Lantern.
