The Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major-General John-Ochefu Ochai, has commended Professor Umar Ka’oje of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria for voluntarily returning over ₦1 million that was mistakenly paid to him.

The money, amounting to ₦1,153,953.36, was paid to Professor Ka’oje after the expiration of his teaching contract with the NDA.

In a letter of commendation dated Monday, September 11, the NDA praised the professor for his “uncommon moral courage” and “exemplary character.”

The commandant was received by Rahanatu Lawal, the Head of the Department of Political Science and International Studies.

”Only a few people today could exhibit Professor Ka’oje’s uncommon moral courage stressing such exemplary character should be emulated,” Lawal said.

In his remarks, the commandant said that he had to follow up the letter of commendation earlier written to the professor with the physical visit to further show appreciation for such an act.

He described Professor Ka’oje’s actions as “extremely rare” in Africa and pledged the NDA’s readiness to further honour the professor.

Professor Ka’oje, in his response, commended the NDA for recognizing and rewarding honesty.
