Tension as police alert on imminent violence in Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabiru Yusuf.

APC absolves self, calls out NNPP

Bately 72 hours after the Court of Appeal judgment that upheld the removal of Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State by the governorship election tribunal, the police have uncovered plans by some political elements to disrupt the relative peace and order in the state.

According to security operatives, the political elements have resorted to using unconventional media platforms to mobilise their supporters to occupy the streets of Kano to cause disorder.

Addressing journalists, yesterday, at the Bompia Command headquarters, the Commissioner of police, Muhammad Gumel, after an emergency meeting with political parties, said intelligence brief revealed that political gangs were already positioned in strategic locations to kick against the verdict of the appellate court that sacked Yusuf as Kano governor.

Gumel said the joint security meeting of the military and others in Kano specifically engaged representatives of New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP and All Progressives Congress (APC) to caution their supporters against any violent protest in the state.

The CP reminded them that joint security forces had concluded security arrangements to prevent escalation of the tension that might lead to breakdown of law and order, just as he warned that whoever attempted to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere would be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

Besides, the police noted that its restriction of public possession and gathering for political purposes “is still in force”.  The CP added: “The information revealed that the intention of the protesters is to shut down the state in an action, which might likely result in violence. It is on this note that the police command warned residents of the state to be extra careful, as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with provisions of the law.

“But you will all recall that prior to the court ruling, the leadership of both NNPP and APC had been invited by the Kano Police Command and they signed a peace accord on Thursday, November 16, 2023. The peace accord was to maintain harmony and ensure that Kano’s political landscape remained peaceful, irrespective of the judgment’.”

Meanwhile, the representatives of NNPP, Wada Dao, and APC, Zakari Zarina, disassociated their supporters from any violent protest in the state. After the CP’s address, the two representatives pledged, on behalf of their parties and members, to remain calm and desist from fomenting trouble. They maintain that anyone found disturbing the public should be made to face the music.
