Dissolve INEC, prosecute chairman, SDP chieftain urges Tinubu

Chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Ben Adaji, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to dismantle the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Adaji made the call during a press conference in Jalingo, Taraba State, while reacting to the recent off-cycle governorship election in Kogi State.

Expressing his discontent with the electoral process, Adaji demanded the immediate apprehension and prosecution of INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, along with every official implicated in what he referred to as the “Kogi daylight robbery.”

In a scathing critique, Adaji asserted that conduct of the November 11 Kogi governorship election not only brought shame to African democracy but also amounted to a mockery of the country.

The House of Representatives candidate for Ankpa federal constituency in the 2023 elections warned that INEC’s misconduct could indirectly pave the way for lawlessness in the country. He argued that the election, marred by blatant rigging and impunity, might serve as an open invitation for anarchy.

Urging relevant authorities to rectify the perceived wrongs committed by INEC during the Kogi election, Adaji expressed concern that if the electoral umpire becomes synonymous with “daylight robbery,” citizens might lose faith in the electoral process, potentially resorting to armed resistance to safeguard their rights.

He expressed disappointment in Yakubu, a professor, emphasising that the INEC chairman should have resigned following the Kogi election.

The SDP chief accused INEC of contradictory statements and acceptance of results from areas marred by electoral fraud and irregularities.

Sounding a note of caution, Adaji declared that the country “is on a dangerous precipice,” describing the present situation as a fragile stage marked by impunity.

He highlighted the urgent need for citizens to mobilise against selfish and corrupt leaders, warning that the country is sitting on a keg of gunpowder.
