Adeleke backs Tinubu for second term, calls him ‘Son of Osun’

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke

The re-elected Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed his endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

Adeleke made his position known in a video posted on X on Sunday, while delivering a broadcast in which he outlined his renewed five-point agenda for the state following his victory in the governorship election.

The governor, while commending Tinubu for what he described as his support for a free and fair election, said the President had demonstrated commitment to democracy through the conduct of the Osun governorship poll.

“At this point, I must deeply appreciate Mr President and His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his strong support for a free and fair election,” Adeleke said.

Describing Tinubu as a “son of Osun State,” the governor said he was reaffirming his earlier decision to support the President’s bid for another term in office.

“Mr President is the son of Osun State, and I hereby reaffirm my earlier endorsement of him for a second term in the 2027 presidential election,” he said.

Adeleke’s reaffirmation comes shortly after his re-election in the Osun governorship election, where he secured a renewed mandate to lead the state for another four years.

Earlier on Sunday, the Guardian learnt that President Tinubu congratulated Adeleke on his electoral victory, describing the outcome as a confirmation of the confidence the people of Osun State reposed in the governor.

The President’s reaction was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, through his official X handle.

Tinubu disclosed that he had personally called Adeleke to congratulate him on his victory and urged the governor to use his renewed mandate to unite the people of Osun State.

“I called Governor Ademola Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory in Osun State. His victory once again confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have in him,” Tinubu said.

The President urged Adeleke to put the election behind him and mobilise residents of the state towards achieving growth, stability and social and economic development, irrespective of their political affiliations or the candidates they supported during the election.

“Now that he has won, Governor Adeleke must unite the people of Osun State and rally them for growth, stability, and social and economic progress, regardless of the political choices they made at the election,” he said.

Tinubu also commended the other candidates who participated in the election, praising them for the courage and discipline they displayed throughout the electoral process.

According to the President, the participation of the various candidates contributed to the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic culture, while the outcome of the election reflected the choice of the electorate.

“I salute the courage and discipline displayed by other contestants in the election. Their participation deepened and enriched our country’s democratic culture,” Tinubu said.

He added that the outcome of the election was “a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in our land.”

The President also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for conducting what he described as a peaceful and transparent election that produced a clear winner.

Adeleke’s latest declaration further reinforces the political alignment between the Osun governor and the President ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the governor reiterating his support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
