Nasarawa women protesters seek justice for two Lafia wards

As the protest by widows and aged women in Lafia, Nasarawa State, enters day three, following a Court of Appeal judgment on the governorship election, the protesters have called on the court to give justice to Gayam and Chiroma wards in Lafia Local Council.

The over 500 widows and aged begged the judiciary not to ignore the alleged falsification of election results in the two wards, noting that they would be traumatised, “if claims on technicalities is given prominence” in the judgment.

One of the protesters, 80-year-old Sarah Danjuma, said after yesterday’s protest in Lafia: “How can anyone overlook the irregularities in Gayam and Chiroma wards during the March 18 governorship election under the guise of technicalities?

“Total number of accredited voters in Gayam ward, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was about 13,000. Then in the result of that election, 33,000 votes were given to the APC alone by INEC. This is traumatising, and that is the point we are making.

“Second, in Chiroma, the number of accredited voters, according to INEC records, is 21,000, but INEC announced 59,000 votes solely for the APC. Who will know all these and just fold arms in a democratic system? These and more are the discrepancies the court shielded and went ahead to nullify the tribunal victory of David Ombugadu, which is traumatising us as women in Nasarawa.”

According to her, the women have their lives in their hands everyday, ignoring the danger associated with protests.

She added: “Look at what the Nigerian Army did to us three days ago as we protested. If not for God’s mercy on our side, many of us would have been crushed to death.

“We have been called all kinds of names by the APC. They said we are being paid to go nude.”
