Christmas: Rotary Club fetes Lagos pupils, commissions project

Just as the Christmas song goes, it was joy to the world and indeed, the pupils and teachers of Oba Yekini Adeniji Elegushi Primary School, Itedo community, Lagos, when the Rotary Club of Lekki Phase 1 Lagos held a Christmas/end of year party.

There was so much to eat and drink. The club presented them with a cake, while assorted gift items were distributed to the pupils. The teachers all smiled homes with bags of rice and groundnut oil.

The festive spirit came alive when the pupils entertained the guests with music and dance from various ethnic groups.  Teachers and members of the club danced happily embodying the true spirit of love and warmth for the season.

The event was more than just a party for everyone that attended. It was memorable and fun-filled, too. The club also commissioned and officially presented  “Project Water” built for the school.

The project consisted of installation of some wash hand basins within the school premises.

During the presentation ceremony, the club President, Mike Jaga, said that the essence was to promote sanitation, hygiene and good health among pupils.

Past president, Ifeoma Anieze Corona demonstrated how best the pupils could wash their hands  while Tunji Funsho spoke to them on the importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene. Kayode Adeniriokun was on hand to lend his support.

Adeniriokun said the school was chosen about 17 years ago since it is a low income neighbourhood school with a view of impacting on the community. He stated that the club has carried out a lot of projects which have impacted positively on the pupils in the last 17 years. He noted that the Christmas/end of year party is an important event which the children look forward to every year and it was a testament to the Club’s commitment to creating memorable experiences in the community.

He recalled that in initially, when they started holding the Christmas party, the children would not eat it their rice during the party in the school but would take the food home. “So, we started giving them enough to take home”.

“We have done a lot of projects in the school. Now, their lot has greatly improved over the years and we are happy about it”.

The school head teacher spoke glowingly of the impact of the Rotary club on the school over the years and pray God to bless them.
