Arewa elites want oil theft allegation against Navy probed

Arewa Intelligentia Caucus, yesterday, raised the alarm over alleged crude oil theft, economy sabotage and promotion of insecurity in the nation’s waterways, and called for the probe of the Nigerian Navy under Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla.

The group, in a statement signed by its President, Abubakah Ciroma, while commending President Bola Tinubu on the panel set up to probe the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria, led by Jim Obazee, urged him to do same for the Navy over the many allegations against it.

Ciroma maintained that the revelation in the publication of ‘Oyo State Capital: The O’dua Integrity Network’ prompted the group to demand the probe of the Navy.

He advised that in order for the probe to be void of interference, Ogalla should be relieved of his duty.

Ciroma stated that an institution established by government for national defence cannot turn around to work against its mandate, adding that given that the Navy is an apex security institution, alongside the Nigerian Army and Airforce, it was funded by taxpayers money.

The group said: “The publication was revealing enough on the Navy’s sabotage of the nation’s oil assets and actions that border on instigating insecurity. The contents were quite shocking.

“The allegations levelled against the Nigerian Navy must not be swept under the carpet. They are serious, damaging and demand a thorough investigation to establish their veracity.

“The Federal Government contracted the surveillance and protection of oil pipelines in the Niger Delta region to private security companies when the Nigerian Navy abysmally failed in its duty.”
