Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have killed 10 people, including the village head of Kukar Babangida community, Maigari Haruna, in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident which occurred in the wee hours of Thursday at 1.30 am, happened when the gunmen armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the community in their numbers, riding on motorcycles.

They were said to have divided themselves and moved from house to house, harassing and carting away valuables, before carrying out the dastard act.

It is not clear if the gunmen abducted some of the villagers, an action which often characterised such attacks in the past.

The community where the incident occurred is said to be located along the Katsina-Jibia road, where there are more than a dozen security checkpoints, including those of the military, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), police, and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Jibia is notorious for recording incessant cases of security challenges, including killings, kidnappings, animal rustling and the like.

It is one among about a dozen council areas facing security challenges in the state, due to its proximity to a dreaded expanse of forest reserve area, where terrorists are known to have their hideouts.

Hundreds of people have been killed, maimed, raped, or had their communites ravaged by terrorists since the security situation begun more than a decade ago.

Chairman of the council area, Bishir Sabiu confirmed the incident, adding that the gunmen killed 10 persons, including the village head.

As at time of report, spokesperson for the police command in the state, ASP Abubakar Aliyu was yet to respond to inquiry on the incident.
