Immediate past Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Imo Orientation Agency, Dr. Fidel Onyeneke, has appealed to Nigerians to imbibe the culture of protecting public facilities in their areas.
Onyeneke made the appeal, at the weekend, while fielding questions from The Guardian, maintaining that it was one of the best ways to ensure Nigeria’s development and well-being.
He expressed dismay over the rampant way people disregard public property, including daily vandalism of public facilities. He lamented the manner public facilities, such as electricity, water, roads, other infrastructure and materials are carted away in both urban and rural areas without regard.
He said: “It is very disheartening the way people destroy and vandalise public property in different parts of Nigeria. Such unpatriotic acts retard developmental growth. This must be abhorred. Everyone should safeguard public property, including electrical, school, hospital and other facilities within his or her domains.”
Onyeneke, a media relations guru, also cautioned against destruction of schools, hospitals and other public buildings, describing such acts as criminal and unpatriotic.
He said that monarchs, town union presidents general and other community leaders should work out better ways of safeguarding public installations in their domains.
