
The Oloja of Lagos has concluded plans to host an historical event tagged: The Return 1862, to commemorate the historic return of King Kosoko and his followers to Lagos in 1862.
Scheduled to hold from September 8 to 16, 2024, the week-long ceremony, is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage and a tribute to the legacy of King Kosoko and his followers, who played a significant role in shaping the history of Lagos.
The Oloja of Lagos-Elect, Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko, who made the announcement during a press briefing in his palace, said the return of King Kosoko, resulted to the founding of the settlement known as Epetedo and the establishment of the Ereko palace.
“The Return 1862 is a celebration of our rich cultural heritage and a tribute to the legacy of King Kosoko and his followers, who played a significant role in shaping the history of Lagos. This event aims to promote cultural awareness, unity, and tourism, while showcasing the traditions and customs of the Lagos people. The Return 1862 has always been the only event that brings the indigenous people of Lagos from all the five divisions of Lagos to one spot.
“The week-long ceremony will feature various activities, including Cultural performances and exhibitions of the relics of king Kosoko and his followers; traditional ceremonies, Church thanksgiving and Jumat service; King Kosoko memorial lectures; street music and dance carnival; districts cultural gatherings and the Lagos Food fairs; and lighting of the arrival light,” he said.
He noted that the grand finale will take place on September 16, 2024 at the King Kosoko Palace, Ereko, Lagos Island.
While noting that dignitaries will be coming across the country, including traditional rulers, government officials, and cultural enthusiasts, Prince Olojo-Kosoko said the Return 1862 is not just a celebration but an opportunity for his people to reflect on the past, appreciate the present, and shape their future.
“We believe that this event will foster unity, promote cultural exchange, and contribute to the economic development of Lagos.
