NSE seeks appointment of engineers to head Lagos MDAs

In a bid to improve their contributions to the national infrastructure landscape, the President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mrs Margaret Oguntala, has urged the Lagos State government to appoint qualified engineers to head engineering-related Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

She also charged the government to invest more in capacity building of engineers as such professionals bring a unique problem-solving mindset and technical expertise that are crucial for the successful implementation of projects.

The society requested that more engineers be employed in the civil service at Grade Level 10, ensuring parity with other professionals and enhancing the capacity of the workforce to meet the state’s development goals.

Oguntala, who appealed when she led a delegation consisting of senior NSE members on a visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended the commitment of the government to the development of the state, particularly in enhancing the capabilities of engineers.

She argued that NSE is well-positioned to partner with the government in capacity development endeavours for engineers in the state as the NSE Professional Development Department offers a series of training programmes and modules designed to elevate the skills and expertise of engineers.

Oguntala said by leveraging these resources, the NSE could ensure that engineers in Lagos are at the forefront of technological advancements and innovative solutions, as well as contribute to the state’s infrastructure and economic growth.

“The society has remained resolute in promoting the highest standards of engineering practice, supporting the professional growth of its members, conducting research, and providing advisory services at various levels of government and the private sector,” Oguntala explained.

She further lauded the government for its support for gender inclusivity in engineering and other sectors, adding the governor’s advocacy aligns with the ‘He4She’ initiative meant to empower women.

“The NSE is particularly impressed by your efforts in the areas of transportation, housing, and renewable energy, which have made Lagos the cynosure of all eyes. We commend your administration’s proactive measures to prevent building collapses by establishing agencies such as the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and involving independent professionals from the built industry.

“This approach not only enhances the safety of our buildings but also instils public confidence in the construction sector and engineering professionals. Additionally, your administration’s consistent appointment of women to positions of authority and power is a testament to your dedication to inclusivity and progressive leadership,” Oguntala said.

She told the governor that in alignment with NSE’s mission to contribute to the nation’s development, it has developed the “Lagos State Engineering Index and Infrastructure Scorecard 2022/2023, a comprehensive document that assesses the current state of infrastructure and provides strategic recommendations for future budgeting and improvements.

Oguntala explained that the document is a valuable tool for the government, offering insights that can help steer ongoing and future projects toward tremendous success and sustainability.

The NSE boss also said with the decentralisation of the electricity sector, each state would now be able to develop its own generation, transmission, and distribution, urging Lagos State to lead this revolutionary change.

She said: “The state employs over a thousand engineers, including more than 400 electrical and mechanical engineers, who should be allowed to demonstrate their expertise in this sector. For these engineers, the real work begins now. I look forward to seeing electrical and mechanical engineers take prominent roles within the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, driving innovation and progress.”

She further urged the government to prioritise partnership with NSE to fulfil its dream as well as bequeath a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Reacting, Sanwo-Olu commended Nigerian engineers for their contributions to the growth of Lagos, particularly in the area of infrastructure development and Nigeria in general. He assured that the government would continue to partner with the NSE in its developmental strides.

He expressed gratitude for the development of the infrastructure scorecard and acknowledged the crucial role of engineers in overseeing and executing infrastructure projects.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the need for continuous capacity building for engineers to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of state projects.

The governor also requested NSE’s assistance in organising training programmes to enhance project management skills among Lagos State engineers.
