• State govt reviews 24-hour curfew
A coalition of northern social movement has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to hold members of his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) responsible for destruction and looting of public property during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Kano.
Under the platform of Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), the coalition faulted the President’s national broadcast for failing to address the core demands of protesters.
Briefing journalists yesterday at Kano Press Centre, convener of the group, Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, submitted that the Thursday’s demonstration, which started peacefully, was suddenly interrupted by another group of people allegedly organised by APC chieftains.
He worried that while Tinubu was prompt to cite the devastation that erupted from the Kano protest, he was silent over those who sponsored anti-protest youths to unleash terror on those on genuine cause for good governance.
Daudu lamented that despite several cases of injuries and maiming of innocent protesters and destruction of properties worth millions of Naira, the President’s address failed to address the masterminds of the crime.
The group, therefore, challenged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to investigate those that attacked the peaceful protesters with the intent of bringing the culprits to book.
The convener maintained that in spite of the attack, the coalition would continue to demand good governance, while asking the state governors to equally justify the resources disbursed to them to ease the suffering of the people.
HOWEVER, the state government has further reviewed the existing 24-hour curfew to between 6.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m. Kano State Commissioner of Police, Dogo Salman, said the decision was arrived at after a Security Council meeting. He emphasised the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state, while gradually easing restrictions to allow residents to resume their daily activities.
The CP said the decision to relax the curfew hours reflects the improved security situation and efforts of the security agencies in restoring normalcy in Kano.
Governor Yusuf imposed the 24-hour curfew on Thursday following the violence that greeted the #EndBadGovernance protest in the state.
The restriction, which was reviewed by five hours on Friday to enable Muslims observed congregational prayers. Until the recent extension, not the relaxation, residents were restricted to between 8.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. freedom in the last three days.
