In commemoration of the World Breastfeeding Week, the Accountability, Competence, Innovation, Optimism and Excellence (ACIOE) Group, in collaboration with the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, has reinforced its commitment to improving maternal and newborn care within communities.

This partnership highlights the importance of breastfeeding as a critical component of maternal and child health.

This year, the World Breastfeeding Week with the theme “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All” was commemorated across three Primary Health Centers in Lagos State.

ACIOE mentioned that breastfeeding offers unparalleled benefits for both mothers and babies as it’s natural nourishment which has been the cornerstone of infant care for centuries.

The group noted that the commemoration of the World Breastfeeding Week provided an opportunity to strengthen commitment to improving maternal and newborn outcomes within communities.

The sessions, which had over two hundred mothers in attendance at these health facilities, allowed mothers and caregivers to ask pertinent questions influencing their breastfeeding choice with a platform to dispel harmful myths and address societal concerns around breastfeeding and how to seek support during their breastfeeding journey.

The Permanent Secretary for Lagos State Health District VI, Dr. Cecilia Mabogunje, said breastmilk is very important as it nourishes and keeps the baby healthy.

“All the nutrients the baby needs are in the breastmilk, and mothers should try to breastfeed their baby exclusively for the first six months,” she said.

Director of Medical Services for District VI, Dr Osinachi Ubani reiterated the benefits of breastfeeding for the baby, mother, family, and the community at large.

In addition to the health talks, mothers were presented with gift items following a competitive quiz session, which further improved their knowledge about breastfeeding.
