The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, yesterday, constituted a seven-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Eighth National Youth Games, slated for September 10-20, in Asaba.

The LOC is headed by a former sports commissioner, Solomon Ogba, who also served as two-time president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). Ogba is currently the first vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).

Also named in the LOC for the National Youth Games is the President of the AFN, Tonobok Okowa, who is the immediate past chairman of Delta Sports Commission. Other members include the former Director General of the Sports Commission, Chief Victor Onogagamue, the President of the Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, Chief Chinonye Daphey-Aliyu, Onoriode Oborevwori, and Harrison Ochulor, while the current Director General of the Sports Commission, Festus Ohwojero, is secretary of the committee.

Some top officials from the Federal Ministry of Sports in Abuja, are expected to arrive in Asaba, on Sunday, for a three-day Joint Technical Meeting to prepare the ground for the Eighth National Youth Games.

In 2023, Delta State hosted the 7th edition of the Games and topped the medals table just when Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was settling down in office. Going by the agreement between Delta State and the Federal government last year, the state will also host the next two editions of the NYG in 2025 and 2026.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Directors of Sports in Nigeria, Utobo Emmanuel, who is also the Director of Sports in Ebonyi State, has praised Governor Oborevwori for ensuring the eighth edition of the Games holds as scheduled, just as he urged all state governors across the federation to release funds early for their athletes to compete at the Games.

The Guardian recalls that the National Youth Games started in 2013 as an idea conceived by the Federal Government to find and develop youthful talent by allowing them to thrive in a variety of sports disciplines. Team Delta has won all past editions of the National Youth Games.
