President Bola Tinubu has taken the lead in coordinating efforts across government agencies and stakeholders to develop and implement a robust strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change on food production, the Special Assistant to the President on Climate Change Matters, Yusuf Kailani, have said.

Kailani stated this while responding to questions from journalists on the sidelines of a high-level dialogue and flood impacts report launch conference organised by Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), yesterday, in Abuja.

The event is themed, ‘Protecting Small Farmers and Vulnerable Communities from Climate-Related Shocks: Implementing Early Warning Systems (EWS) for Food Security and Livelihood Resilience in Nigeria.’

Executive Secretary of HEDA, Sulaimon Arigbabu, earlier raised concern about the lack of political will to address the pressing climate change issues despite early warnings from experts.

The Presidential aide, however, said that efforts have already been made to implement adaptation measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change.  He recalled that the National Council on Climate Change launched a national transition plan to guide Nigeria’s transition towards a more sustainable future, in June.

He said that another significant project was the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint and promote cleaner energy alternatives.

Kailani maintained that professionals and experts are being engaged to ensure the continuity and success of these climate initiatives, stressing the importance of partnerships with relevant stakeholders to achieve the nation’s climate goals.
