Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been honoured with the title of Sardaunan Ilorin by the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, in recognition of his leadership and commitment to promoting the community’s culture and peace.

In a significant gesture of recognition, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been conferred with the prestigious title of Sardaunan Ilorin by the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

The title, which is the second of its kind in the ancient town, honours the Governor’s dedication to preserving and promoting the culture and tradition of Ilorin, Nigeria’s southernmost Emirate.

Governor AbdulRazaq follows in the footsteps of the late Alhaji Umar Saro, a multibillionaire philanthropist who was the first to hold the Sardauna title in Ilorin. The Sardauna title is historically significant, with Sir Ahmadu Bello, the revered leader of old northern Nigeria, being one of its most famous bearers in Sokoto.

At the brief ceremony, the Emir praised AbdulRazaq for his exemplary leadership qualities and his unwavering support for the community, particularly his role in the Ilorin Grand Durbar. The Governor’s hands-on approach to governance and his focus on the welfare of the people were highlighted as key reasons for this honour.

“I am convinced that Governor AbdulRazaq is not only popular, but he also believes in and promotes our tradition and custom,” the Emir stated. “He made sure he participated actively in the annual Ilorin Grand Durbar. So he deserves the honour of a Chieftaincy title to do more.”

The Emir emphasized the importance of popularity and influence in conferring such titles, noting that AbdulRazaq is widely respected both at home and abroad. His recent appointment as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) was cited as further evidence of his esteemed status.

Describing the Governor as a promoter of peace, the Emir attributed the relative tranquility in Kwara State to AbdulRazaq’s efforts, despite widespread security challenges across the country. “We must give credit to God Almighty and to the Governor for encouraging peace. That is why he has been progressive and he will continue to progress,” the Emir added.

In response, Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his gratitude for the honour, viewing the title as an encouragement to continue his service to the community. “We are truly grateful, and this encourages us to do more for our communities,” he said.

The Governor also lauded the Emir and other traditional rulers for their roles in maintaining peace and stability, advocating for constitutional roles to be granted to traditional rulers in Nigeria.

During his visit to the Emir’s Palace, Governor AbdulRazaq was accompanied by prominent figures, including the Majority Leader of the Kwara House of Assembly, Hon. Oba AbdulKadir Magaji, and other top government officials and party chieftains. The Governor also took the opportunity to extend his condolences to the Emir over the recent passing of the mother of Sarkin Gobir, Alhaji Muhammadu Issa Bawa.
