A forty-three-year-old woman, Mrs. Peace Aruma, is battling breast cancer and needs the financial assistance of Nigerians to survive.

Her histopathology report at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, jointly signed by a Consultant Pathologist, Dr. C. C. Eluke and Registrar, Dr. G. O. Okonkwo, which was seen by The Guardian, read in part: “Sections from the lymph node shows effacement of the nodal architecture. There is a malignant epithelial of atypical cells disposed in cords, trabeculae and nests. Four out of the 11 lymph nodes contain tumour deposits.”

The mother of three, who was diagnosed of metastatic lymphadenopathy with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma at the hospital, had earlier received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and then had mastectomy at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu on December 14, 2023, after which she was referred to UNTH for further treatment. She has undergone another surgery at UNTH and is billed for radiotherapy sessions at the hospital but has no money to fund the treatment.

Narrating her ordeal in tears, Peace said she was billed N1,250,000, which must be provided before the treatment can start but the efforts of her family to raise the money was not yielding results.

“They said I must provide the money before the treatment can start but my family cannot provide the money. Everyone around me has become poor because of me. This bill is like my death sentence because I don’t see where the money will come from. That is why I am pleading with Nigerians to help me. I don’t want to die now. My children are very young and I don’t want them to be motherless. They told us at the hospital that cancer is not a death sentence, that people survive it. I want to be among those that will tell their stories of survival,” she said in tears.
