Suspected secessionist gunmen, yesterday, attacked and bombed the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in Idemili South Local Council, Anambra State.
The Guardian gathered that a police Corporal was killed in the incident, while several others sustained varying degrees of injury.
The gunmen also attacked the Oba Civic Centre. The attack is the second in the last four days on government establishments in the state. Last Friday, August 30, some gunmen attacked the Ogbaru Local Council Secretariat.
It was gathered that the hoodlums, who invaded the council secretariat in the early hours, set buildings ablaze, including a town hall meant for traditional rulers and some administrative facilities on the premises.
The Ogbaru Local Council secretariat had suffered a similar attack on June 15, 2024.The reason for the attacks is currently unknown. Sources said that it coincides with a declaration by a faction of the secessionist group, which called for a month-long hostility against government establishments in the Southeast since last month. The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, yesterday.
Ikenga said: “A joint security force comprising the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies is currently conducting a joint operation in Oba and its environs.” He said that the gunmen shot sporadically and threw petrol bombs, causing fires in some offices and the civic centre.
Ikenga’s statement reads: “The Police-led Joint Security Force comprising the Army, Navy, Civil Defence and other security agencies are currently in a joint operation within Oba and environs, following an attack in the early hours of today, September 3, 2024, on Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Centre.
“The suspected armed secessionist group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the Police Station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire including the Oba Civic Centre.”
The Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam, while condemning the act, described the invasion of security facilities and hostility towards security agents as an attack on the soul of the nation and vowed to bring those behind the unholy act to book.
