Poised to revolutionise the streaming industry with its innovative offering, the first movie streaming platform in Nigeria, Naija Prime, has announced its entry.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Lagos, the brains behind the concept, Martins Osuofia, said they intend to remain very affordable, providing streaming services to Nigerians between N50-100 and no subscriptions required. Catering to content creators and filmmakers, he said they offer instant daily withdrawal and promote only Nollywood contents and are exclusive to Nigeria.

Describing his offering as better than the existing streaming platforms, he said they are set to change the way Nigerians see movie streaming. “Over time, we have had Netflix and YouTube, which have helped content creators and provided new streams of income for them. However, they are not local and cannot fully serve our interests as Naija Prime would.”

He said this was what spurred him to create a solution for Nigerians with fully Nigerian contents. Adding that Naija Prime has features of both YouTube and Netflix combined, he said local content creators will earn more on his platform. “With the others, you have to wait 30 days to get paid and sometimes, what you get at the end of the day might not be commensurate with what you have spent on creating the content. We want to build this and take it outside the shores of Nigeria, to compete in international markets and collaborate with major film houses in Hollywood and the rest of the world.”

He said a visit to their webapp, NaijaPrime.ng, will give access to as much content as possible, including full length movies, short films, skits and so on when they officially launch on October 1, 2024. “We’ll roll out our app very soon but for now, it can be accessed via web. We want our movies to take their rightful place and compete with the rest of the world. It took us six months to build this platform up because our aim is to take Nollywood global to every part of the world but most importantly, we want movie makers and content creators to be fairly compensated and live off their talents,” he said.

Speaking on the future of content creation in Nigeria, he said with regards to their platform, they would have at least two effective international film company situated in Nigeria, collaborating with the local film and movie industry by next year. He said there are thousands of content creators all over the country but are not encouraged by the current situation, saying content creators will earn big with NaijaPrime “This is our own and I am calling on everyone to support us as much as possible,” he said.

A content creator and talk show host present at the briefing, Petite Talker, praised the initiative as groundbreaking and innovative but said the major challenge she foresees is the fact that content creators have to upload content exclusively on the app. “We know Nigerians like to make money from different sources but if creators are well compensated as they have promised, it will not be a problem. I am calling on creators to stick to our own and help this grow to the level of its would-be rivals and even bigger than them,” she said.
