The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man identified simply as Godwin over the alleged defilement of two minors, aged 13 and 11, in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect was reportedly arrested on Monday by operatives of the Eleme Police Division following a formal complaint lodged by the parents of the two children.
According to the father of the 13-year-old victim, the suspect allegedly lured the children into his room under the guise of sending them on errands.
He alleged that the suspect would send the two minors to purchase items for him and, upon their return, invite them into his room.
The father further alleged that the suspect would then lock the door, increase the volume of music playing in the room and sexually assault the children.
He also alleged that the suspect threatened the minors with severe consequences if they disclosed the alleged abuse to their parents or anyone else.
The allegations reportedly came to light after the victims’ parents became aware of what had allegedly been happening and subsequently lodged a complaint with the police.
Following the complaint, operatives of the Eleme Police Division moved to arrest the suspect at his residence.
The arrest has since triggered an investigation by the police to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine whether the suspect has a case to answer.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, confirmed the arrest.
“Yes, I can confirm the arrest of the suspect. Investigation into the allegation is ongoing,” the police spokesperson said.
The police are expected to interview the victims, their parents and other relevant witnesses as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the identity of the alleged victims has been withheld in line with the need to protect minors involved in sexual abuse cases.
