Save Nigeria, League of Columnists tells Tinubu

Nigeria League of Columnists has called on President Bola Tinubu to take drastic measures to save the country from collapse and restore citizens’ confidence in his administration.

In a statement, yesterday, signed by the National President of the League, Chief Tola Adeniyi; National Vice President, Mallam Yakubu Mohammed and National Secretary, Prof Anthony Kila, the group said it was aware that almost all the nations of the world were going through various and varied degrees of economic challenges, political turmoil, destabilising insecurity and loss of faith in their leaders.

It also said it was aware that the leaderships of the same nations under stress and strife are doing their utmost to combat the challenges faced, by seeking solutions and carrying their citizens along, but said Tinubu must jettison the policy of political patronage over people’s welfare and come to terms with the reality on ground.

The statement adds: “President Tinubu should also remove himself as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, whereas constituency allowance for senators and members of the House of Representatives should be scrapped immediately.

“Our National Assembly members were not elected to become contractors. This should apply to state Assemblies as well,” the league said.

The league also emphasised that no effort should be spared in ensuring that the country was secure and safe from the stranglehold of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and blood-sucking ritualists, saying: “It is doable with a strong political will.”

It also noted, among others, that if electricity, insecurity and policy summersaults continue to drive away multinationals, hamper skilled artisans from performing optimally, and drive away farmers nationwide, the value of the naira will continue its free fall.
