The Presidential Initiative for Compressed Natural Gas (PI-CNG) has called on Nigerians to embrace the opportunities of running on gas to cushion the economic hardship in the country.

The Presidential Initiative for Compressed Natural Gas (PI-CNG) has called on Nigerians to embrace the opportunities of running on gas to cushion the economic hardship in the country.

With the rising cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol and continued fuel scarcity, the PI-CNG believes that conversion of vehicles to run on gas offers a more sustainable alternative, highlighting the country’s abundant gas reserves, particularly in the face of widespread economic hardship.

The Head of Commercial Operations of PI-CNG, Omoh Imouchuede, during the distribution of CNG kits in Lagos, stressed the need for the public to take advantage of the development considering the multiplier impacts on the economy.

Imouchuede, while commending President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the initiative, said it is a positive development.

However, he emphasised that acceptance is crucial, and based on observations, there has been significant acceptance, which has contributed to the progress recorded so far.

He stressed the importance of establishing a solid implementation framework with partners, noting that it is critical to understand the need for CNG to be adopted across all spheres. As a starting point, they are focusing on mass transit, which will serve as a foundation for broader adoption.

“It’s important for everyone to see the importance that CNG is here to stay and to rally behind Mr. President to ensure that the initiative hits its mark. A million vehicles by 2027, and we’re going to do it, it is achievable, all hands are on deck, and we’re working tirelessly every day. And our programme directors are all over the place, ensuring that everyone is aware of what we’re doing.

“So, the key thing for us is to keep pushing and working with our partners. And we’re looking towards meeting many more milestones come the end of this year, 2025, and towards 2027,” he said.

Imouchuede mentioned that the availability of conversion kits, which is currently being worked on, and the increase in the number of conversion centers are key measures being implemented to ensure the success of the initiative. These efforts aim to make CNG adoption more accessible and efficient across the country.

“If this is an opportunity with regards to what the Federal Government, with the vision of Mr. President, is keying in to transform the challenges that we’re going through, then hopefully that should be enough. There’s hope for Nigeria. We have more gas reserves than crude. So, everybody needs to tap into it, it’s not going to be easy. Nothing that good comes easy. But everybody needs to be part and parcel of this initiative,” he said.
