Nigerian champions, Rangers Football Club of Enugu’s faint hopes of qualifying for the group stage of the CAF Champions League was extinguished, yesterday, in Luanda, Angola, by Sagrada Esperanca of Angola, who beat the Flying Antelopes 3-1 in the second leg of their Second Round tie.

Rangers defeated the Angolans by 1-0 and needed a draw or a 2-1 loss to qualify on the away goals rule. But the Angolans had other ideas as two quick goals in the first half and another in the second half ensured that they moved on in the Nigerians’ stead.

Rangers’ lone strike in the game was not enough to see them into the group stage of the CAF Champions League for the first time in over 10 years. They lost on a 3-2 aggregate score.

Enyimba was luckier in the CAF Confederation Cup as they defeated Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso 3-2 via a penalty shoot-out in Aba to move into the group stage of the competition.

Enyimba held the Burkinabe team to a goalless draw in Bamako, Mali a week ago, and were expected to have an easy ride at home in Aba.  But the game turned out to be the hardest challenge in recent times and they just hung on to win by the penalty shootout.

With yesterday’s results, Enyimba is now Nigeria’s sole representative in the 2023/24 CAF inter-club competitions. El-Kanemi Warriors, who also played in the Confederation Cup, were eliminated in the First Round of the competition, just as Remo Stars also lost in the First Round of the CAF Champions League.
