Include workers’ rights in climate policies, unions demand

Negotiations by the Conference of the Parties (COP) on climate change must consider prioritising climate issues that affect the well-being and job security of workers, Organisation of Trade Unions of West Africa (OTUWA) and Danish Trade Union Development Agency (DTDA) have said.

Speaking, yesterday, in Abuja at the OTUWA/DTDA sub-regional workshop on Climate Change, Just Transition and Social Protection, the acting President of OTUWA, Sophie Kourouma, stressed the need for the strengthening of trade unions’ capacity to engage in Climate and Just Transition advocacy.

While lamenting the low level of social protection in West Africa, OTUWA revealed that only 13 per cent of the population had access to any form of social protection.
