To advance environmental sustainability and commemorate World Clean-up Day, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has initiated a motorised advocacy campaign focused on targeted areas within Eti-Osa Local Council.

Themed “Make Room for Life”, the roadshow, which kicked off at the Lekki Toll Gate and covered major areas like Ilasan, Jakande, and Ajah, aims to raise awareness about waste management and encourage responsible waste disposal practices among residents.

LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the campaign is part of a broader effort to mobilise citizens, communities, and organisations to actively maintain a cleaner environment.

“Our goal is to drive a change in behaviour and attitudes towards proper waste management in Lagos,” he stated. The campaign also seeks to address pressing issues like illegal dumping and cart pushing, which pose significant environmental challenges.

Gbadegesin highlighted the significance of World Clean-up Day as a reminder for Lagosians to embrace sustainable waste practices such as sorting, recycling, and using designated bins. He stressed that these practices are crucial in reducing waste in landfills and streets.

The roadshow, conducted in English, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo, focused on educating residents about responsible waste disposal and the importance of sorting, bagging, and containerising waste.

LAWMA’s “Adopt-a-Bin” initiative, featuring new geo-located smart bins equipped with RFID panels, was a key highlight. These bins are designed to prevent theft and improve waste management efficiency, aligning with the state’s vision of becoming a smart city.

Adewunmi Adetona, Head of LAWMA’s Advocacy Unit, called for the use of smart bins to achieve a clean and sustainable environment and noted that cleanliness is vital for economic growth and investment.

LAWMA Ambassador Alhaji Sikiru Ademola Junaid (Lemon) engaged the community through music, performing the “Keep Lagos Clean and Recycle Waste” song to reinforce the message of waste separation.

The campaign saw the participation of various LAWMA departments and units, including street sweepers, medical staff, and enforcement personnel, alongside officials from LASTMA, demonstrating a collective commitment to achieving a cleaner and smarter Lagos.
