Despite pervasive economic hardship and prevailing hunger in the country, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed optimism that Nigeria will overcome the present instability.
Moreover, Governor Yusuf assured the public of his administration’s commitment to sustaining good governance and ensuring the equitable distribution of the commonwealth in Kano.
He made this commitment today during the match-past parade marking the nation’s Independence Anniversary celebrations at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.
Governor Yusuf reminded attendees that despite daunting challenges such as economic pressure, social inequality, insecurity, and other socio-economic instabilities, his government remains undeterred, determined to forge ahead in building a better society for Kano residents.
The governor said that Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary brings profound reflection on the bravery of nationalists and forefathers who fought for the nation’s liberation from British colonial rule.
He stated that Nigerians would forever appreciate the resilience and sacrifice of individuals like Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Mallam Aminu Kano, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, and many others.
The governor used the opportunity to elaborate on his administration’s achievements in areas such as education, healthcare services, agriculture, water supply, infrastructure, women and youth empowerment, and the environment.
He also commended the civil service in the state for their dedication and assured readiness to promptly review the recommendations of the committee on the New Minimum Wage once presented, to facilitate its urgent implementation.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the planned October mass protest against bad governance in Nigeria may have abandoned their plans as residents continue their lawful activities without fear of intimidation.
Although there were allegations of the arrest of leaders of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM) by security operatives on Monday, it is uncertain if it was connected to the proposed October protest.
A statement made available to The Guardian on Monday evening by Comrade Al Amin of the NPFM Secretariat claimed that the whereabouts of the national chairman of the movement, Comrade Abdulmajid Yakubu Dauda, and others, is unknown.
Efforts to confirm the development from the spokesman of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, were unsuccessful as his phone line was switched off.
