150 rescued in Niger boat mishap — NSEMA
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has stated that no fewer than 150 persons have so far been rescued from the boat mishap that occurred on Tuesday, 1st October 2024, between Mundi and Gbajibo communities in Mokwa Local Council of Niger State.
The Director General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, in a statement made available to newsmen in Minna, said the boat, which was sailing from Mundi to Gbajibo with 300 passengers, mostly women and children on board, capsized at about 8:30 p.m. on Independence Day.
The statement said, “NSEMA received a report of a boat mishap that occurred last night, 1st October 2024, around 8:30 p.m. on River Niger upstream Jebba Dam, at Gbajibo Community in Mokwa Local Council of Niger State.”
The NSEMA boss commended the prompt response from the community volunteers and local divers for rescuing over 150 persons alive.
He added that search and rescue operations are ongoing, with NSEMA collaborating with the Ministry of Transportation as well as the Mokwa Local Council Emergency Committee to locate more survivors.
