The Director, Babcock University Centre for Open, Distance and e-Learning, Prof. Mobolanle Sotunsa, has stressed the need for young people to embrace digital literacy and master digital skills for creativity.

Sotunsa gave the advice at the eighth graduation and award ceremony of Babcock Academy, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

At the event, 52 students from Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) and 52 from the Senior Secondary School graduated from the Academy.

Speaking on the topic ‘Navigating the future: Communication and digital skills for today’s world,’ Sotunsa, who was the guest speaker, spoke about the power of communication and how the students can deploy it to connect with people, share ideas and influence the world around them.

She stressed the importance of clarity and brevity, active listening, and body language in effective communication.

The professor noted that it is important for young people to master digital skills in the communication process, saying it is crucial they develop digital literacy, incorporate knowledge about online safety and embrace digital tools for creativity.

He said: “Whether you’re interested in graphic design, video production, coding, or even game development, there are countless resources available online to help you learn and grow. Embrace these tools and let your creativity shine,” she added.

She explained that if they’re passionate about something, whether music, fashion, science or even Tik Tok and videos, they should use digital platforms by either starting a blog, YouTube channel or a podcast to share their views.

The professor also stressed the need to start networking and building their professional network to connect with people in their field of chosen interest.

“The world is changing, but what will always be in demand are the skills to communicate effectively and navigate the digital landscape with confidence and creativity,” she stated.

The school Principal, Dr Gabriel Fasanu, commended the graduating students for their hardwork, determination and sacrifice.

He thanked God that the school is making tremendous progress, creating awareness and contributing to the educational development of the country, noting that over the years, it has intentionally built a unique brand for moral and academic excellence.

The Valedictorian, Chisom Ezeama, spoke about the valuable lessons she has learned while in the school, and charged her fellow graduands to look forward to the future, which holds endless possibilities.

“No matter where we choose or where we go, let us chase our dreams and make a difference in the world,” Ezeama stated.

At the event, the school rewarded deserving students in academics from JS1 to SS3 with prizes.

In addition, staff awards were given to deserving teaching and non-teaching staff members.
