Libya arrives in Uyo, feigns ‘unpreparedness’

Libya national team

The Libyan delegation to tomorrow’s Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday with a litany of excuses.

The delegation landed at the Port Harcourt International Airport at about noon, on Tuesday, before moving to Uyo, by road. This match is new coach, Nasser Al-Hadhiri’s first game in charge of the Mediterranean Knights since he replaced Serbian Milutin Sredojevic following Libya’s poor showings in their opening two games.

Fans of the Libyan side, who have only one point from their two games and are currently bottom in Group D, believe their team can get the result to set their campaign right. But their coach is not that optimistic.  He said that his team is not completely ready for the match, although he promised that they would put up a good fight against the Super Eagles.

The Libyans will parade a largely home-based side with Club Africain of Tunisia star, Ali Youssef, their highest-rated player.

But he is out of the game due to injury. Al-Hadhiri said: “We have not yet reached the required readiness to face a strong opponent the size of Nigeria.

“We realize that winning against Nigeria is difficult, but we seek to return with a draw that will be positive for us and restore our hope in competing for qualification.”

The Libyans held their first training session in Uyo, yesterday and are expected to feel the main bowl of the Akwa Ibom Stadium, today.
