
In commemorating the World Post Day, the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) has reiterated its advancement from analogue systems to accommodate financial, digital and social inclusion.
It said that its services now include agency banking where financial transactions can take place as well as creating a unique postcode for every house in the country to address verification issues, among others.
Postmaster-General (PMG) and Chief Executive Officer, NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, who stated this, yesterday, during the celebration of World Post Day and unveiling of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) 150 years commemorative postage stamp in Lagos, said that though the world has evolved past post, the operators have also evolved to meet the changing needs of the society, adding that NIPOST has gone beyond mailing letters to include e-commerce, technological advancement, innovation hubs, moving from analogue post-code systems to digital, financial inclusion and other innovations.
Odeyemi, who spoke on challenges facing NIPOST, noted that they are similar with global postal operations, which are ageing infrastructure and lack of financial sustainability.She said that the government should see the postal service as a partner in delivering last-mile solutions.
The Postmaster-General said that the day celebrates UPU’s contribution to connecting communities, enabling communication as well as delivering solutions across the globe. Odeyemi noted that the post is a key infrastructure in communicating and moving mail and commerce across the globe.
Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the PMG, Dr Taliat Kola Talent, said that in a bid to promote inclusion, the commemorative stamp was designed by students.
