The 1990 alumni of Abbi Grammar School, known as Unique Nobles 90 Association, have donated educational materials worth over N1 million to their alma mater and Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Delta State.
The donation, consisting of textbooks, notebooks, chalk, and other learning supplies, reflects the group’s commitment to promoting education in their community.
At the presentation ceremony, Nobles 90 Chairman, Shedrack Onitsha, stressed the importance of education, dismissing claims that it is a “scam.”
He said, “Education is a key equaliser in society, and we want each of you to recognize its value as you build your future.”
Onitsha recalled the challenges and lessons from attending Abbi Grammar School. “We started here in 1984, and the resilience we gained has helped us excel in various fields. Our set includes two professors, several Ph.D. holders, business owners, and professionals,” he noted.
He encouraged students to focus on learning, maintain discipline, and view education as the foundation for success.
Representatives of the Abbi Grammar Old-Student Association (AGOSA), including Nelson Okuzor Esq. and Sir Godsday Owetemu, were present at the event. They commended the Nobles 90 group for their contributions and urged other alumni to support the school.
Sir Owetemu stressed the importance of alumni involvement, saying, “The government cannot meet all the school’s needs alone.”
Accompanying the chairman were other members of Nobles 90, including Vice Chairman Ogbuefi Godfrey, former Chairman Samuel Obije, Assistant Secretary Gladys Oshilimi, Assistant Financial Secretary Ugwu Ikechukwu, PRO Nelson Onyinobode, Faith Owetem, Ineh Chukudi, and Ndidi Smart.
The donated materials included recent editions of Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry textbooks for Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) and Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3). Branded notebooks and writing materials were also provided.
Thirty-five JSS3 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds received personal copies of Mathematics and English textbooks.
At Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, additional materials were given to the top 10 JSS3 students, with branded notebooks distributed to JSS1 and JSS2 students.
The principals of both schools expressed their appreciation. Monday Oshilim, Principal of Abbi Grammar School, said, “It’s heartwarming that years after graduating, this group remembers the importance of supporting education in our community. These textbooks are invaluable resources for our students and the library.”
Ogume Gabriel, Vice Principal of Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, also praised the alumni and highlighted the significance of such contributions to educational development.
Both principals appealed for additional support from the government and alumni, particularly for the provision of desks and perimeter fencing.
The event concluded with the formal handover of textbooks to the school libraries, marking a significant step toward enhancing learning resources for students in Abbi.
