• Say age-limit for admission seekers must be reconsidered
• Dominion varsity offers automatic employment to 35 First Class graduates
• Says 80% of graduating students on scholarship
The Chancellor of Dominion University, Ibadan, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun and the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the institution, Prof. Abel Olorunnisola, have urged the Federal Government to reconsider some of its policies that are antithetical to the growth and survival of private universities.
They also appealed to the government to consider a review of some of its policies, which, according to them, are limiting the growth of private universities in the country.
The duo made the call during a media briefing heralding the second convocation of the university, slated for October 15-20, 2024.
According to them, the exclusion of private universities from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), as well as the age limit for admission seekers, are limiting the capacities of the universities and the potential of brilliant young secondary school leavers.
The Chancellor and the VC, however, said that the university had concluded plans to offer employment opportunities to the First Class graduates of the 2024 graduating set.
The VC said that 35 out of a total graduating 148 students made First Class grade level.
He said that 80 per cent of graduating students enjoyed various scholarship awards granted by the institution, adding that 10 of those who enjoyed the institution’s scholarship also made First Class grades.
The Chancellor, who also doubles as the Presiding Bishop, Victory International Church, urged the government to create a level playing ground for both the private and public universities in the country to operate.
He said a situation whereby certain laws are made to favour a part and affect another might not allow for even growth of the sector.
