Prominent political figures, family members, and well-wishers gathered on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Garki, Abuja, to honour the life of Senator Jonathan Zwingina, who passed away on October 3, shortly after celebrating his 70th birthday.

The late lawmaker, known for his integrity and immense contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process, was remembered with glowing tributes during the commendation service.

He Found Peace Before Passing – Son

Speaking at the service, Zwingina’s eldest son, Kabrh, shared touching details of his father’s final moments.

“I want to testify about his last moments,” Kabrh said. “I called Reverend Tom, and we agreed to meet at the hospital. When we arrived, we sensed something was off. Reverend Tom led us in prayers for salvation and forgiveness. Barely 20 seconds after the prayer, my dad passed away peacefully.”

Shocking Loss

Several dignitaries expressed their shock at Zwingina’s sudden demise, reflecting on the recent celebration of his 70th birthday.

Professor Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information, described Zwingina as a visionary leader and a man of exceptional intellect.

“This is a very shocking departure,” Gana said. “I spoke on that day (Zwingina’s 70th birthday) on behalf of friends and colleagues, not knowing our dear friend would leave us so soon. Senator Zwingina lived a life of tremendous impact, a life of integrity. He was always ahead of his colleagues with his tremendous capacity to think and lead with initiative.”

Gana further noted Zwingina’s role in the restoration of democracy and the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“He was very close to me when we worked together to restore democracy. He was a leader of thoughts and actions,” Gana said, adding: “Your father, your husband, was a man of honour, integrity, and ideas. He lived a life of excellence, and we are proud of him.”

An Encyclopedia of the Senate

Former Senate President Ken Nnamani paid tribute to Zwingina’s sharp intellect, which earned him the nickname “encyclopaedia” during his time in the Senate.

“He was the Ronaldo—or Messi, if you prefer—of the constitutional amendment debates,” Nnamani said. “He had an incredible memory and was always prepared. His passing is a huge loss, not just to Adamawa State but to the entire nation.”

Lifelong Friendship

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, reflected on his decades-long friendship with the late senator.

“Our paths first crossed during our university days, and we remained close ever since,” Mustapha said. “He was a towering figure in Adamawa State politics, and his wisdom will serve as a legacy for future generations. At his 70th birthday celebration, there was no sign he would leave us so soon.”

Former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, also shared fond memories, saying: “I first met Zwingina when I was the military governor of Gongola State, where he served as Director-General of Mass Mobilization for Self Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery. He was a hardworking, intelligent man, and we remained friends ever since.”

A True Nigerian

Adolphus Wabara, another former Senate President, remembered Zwingina as a patriotic leader.

“He embodied the true spirit of unity,” Wabara said. “We worked together harmoniously, and I never even knew he was from the North. He was a true Nigerian, and I believe he now rests in the bosom of the Lord.”

Contributions to the Church

Reverend Israel Akanji, President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, praised Zwingina’s dedication to the church and his generosity.

“He was deeply committed to the things of God,” Akanji said, citing several instances of Zwingina’s selfless contributions to the church’s growth during his time at First Baptist Church, Garki.
