The pledge was made during Design Week Lagos 2024, themed “The Role of Design in Economic Revolution,” where Special Adviser to the Vice President on Digital and Creative Economy  Fegho Umunubo, represented him.

“We will not slow down until we are confident that you are in the prime position to compete with the best the world has to offer,” Shettima said, urging stakeholders to seize available opportunities.

He went on to note that architectural design, for example, reflects cultural values and can attract tourism, foster community pride, and stimulate local economies.

“This administration is committed to diversifying our economy and reviving industrial design. Initiatives like the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan and the Nigerian Policy on National Development are set to revitalise manufacturing, with industrial design as a key driver of growth. A country with a vibrant manufacturing sector has solved half of its problems,” he added.

Shettima further noted that the creative economy is a priority sector for the administration. “The architecture and construction sectors contribute 8% to our national GDP and lay the foundation for communities and organisations to thrive. As the creative industry continues to expand, we stand ready to support you in unlocking its full potential,” he said.

The event also featured a panel discussion with Design Week Lagos Founder and Convener, Titi Ogufere, and the Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, Olori Atuwatse III.

They spoke on the role of design in driving economic growth and cultural development in Nigeria and Africa, stressing the need for improved education to introduce individuals to a range of career paths within the design and engineering fields.

Ogufere shared the importance of broadening career options to prevent talent from being confined to traditional roles. “We’re working on education and promotion so that people realise there’s an industry here that deserves attention. Many of my architect colleagues are doing amazing work, but often go unrecognised,” Ogufere said. “The government needs to engage with us more closely, allowing us to advise on what’s necessary to foster growth for all.”

Olori Atuwatse III added, “The mind of a creative reflects the mind of the Creator. If you want a functional society, include creative minds on Advisory Boards. They may have unconventional approaches, but they bring order, and that’s something governments should begin to adopt.”

The panellists also called for collaboration between creatives and manufacturers to produce high-quality products. To curb brain drain, they urged for the empowerment of African youth through access to opportunities, which they believe would encourage them to stay on the continent and contribute to its development.

Government policies and support were said to be essential in overcoming challenges such as double taxation and access to raw materials in the creative industry.
