An ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives has expressed displeasure over the poor state of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway.
Chaired by Aminu Sani Jaji, the committee, during an oversight tour over the weekend, criticised the contractor’s slow pace of work on the road.
Jaji, concerned about the Works Minister, Engr. Dave Umahi’s threat to revoke the contract if the contractors failed to return to the site, promised to intervene and ensure the issue is resolved promptly.
“What everybody can see today is that the contract was awarded almost six years ago, yet the contractors are working too slowly,” he said.
“That’s why the House found it necessary to form this committee under Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. I believe this committee will bring positive outcomes for the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road, by God’s grace.
“Whether the issue is funding, contractors, or technical challenges, we’ve begun our work, and by God’s grace, we’ll resolve the problems to ensure the project is completed as mandated.”
The lawmaker from Zamfara State urged road users to remain patient, assuring them that efforts would be intensified to restore the road to good condition as soon as possible.
Regarding the ongoing palliative work, Jaji acknowledged that it was meant as a quick fix due to the road’s economic importance but said the committee was dissatisfied with the quality of the work.
The oversight tour aimed to evaluate the milestones achieved by the contractors and assess the ongoing palliative work initiated by the government.
Starting at Zuba, the committee made several stops along the route to Kaduna State, inspecting on-site progress and reviewing efforts to improve the highway’s safety and efficiency for the public.
