Following the outburst by Hon. Oseni Abasi, who represents the Ibarapa/Ido Federal Constituency in Oyo State and is a member of the House Committee on Public Petition, against the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, the Igbo apex group Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Monday advised Oseni to rise above baseless accusations and engage in constructive dialogue aimed at fostering mutual understanding.

In a statement in Abakaliki, the Secretary-General of the Chidi Ibeh-led faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said: “Instead of the baseless outburst, we implore him to undertake an on-site evaluation of the Minister’s initiatives across the country, as such will provide him with firsthand insight into the extensive measures being implemented to restore the integrity of Nigeria’s road networks.”

He further noted that such a visit would not only enlighten Oseni on the current situation but also serve as a testament to the dedicated efforts being prioritized to tackle the nation’s infrastructural challenges.

Isiguzoro maintained that it is important to state that these claims were made without due diligence or regard for substantive evidence, which, according to him, amounts to mere propaganda and irresponsible legislative discourse. He added that Hon. Oseni’s remarks reflect a troubling trend that seeks to undermine the commendable work being undertaken by Senator Umahi.

The statement read: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex sociocultural organization representing the Igbo people, hereby issues an unequivocal and firm response to the recent unfounded allegations made by Hon. Oseni of the House of Representatives against Senator David Umahi, the esteemed Minister of Works.

“These allegations claim that Senator Umahi has failed to effectively address the widespread issue of deteriorating roads throughout the nation and is merely engaged in the repetitive awarding of contracts. Such assertions are not only misguided but also represent an egregious mischaracterization of the Minister’s diligent efforts in infrastructure development.
“We extend an earnest appeal to Hon. Oseni, who represents the Ibarapa/Ido Federal Constituency in Oyo State, to rise above baseless accusations and engage in constructive dialogue aimed at fostering mutual understanding. We implore him to undertake an on-site evaluation of the Minister’s initiatives across the country.

“Such an endeavor would provide him with firsthand insight into the extensive measures being implemented to restore the integrity of Nigeria’s road networks. It would also serve as a testament to the dedicated efforts prioritized to tackle the nation’s infrastructural challenges.

“It is pertinent to state that these claims, articulated without due diligence or regard for substantive evidence, amount to mere propaganda and irresponsible legislative discourse. His remarks reflect a troubling trend that seeks to undermine the commendable work being undertaken by Senator Umahi.

“Senator Umahi inherited an extensive legacy of infrastructural neglect from former administrations, characterized by a plethora of unexecuted road projects and dilapidated roadways. Despite these inherited challenges and the constraints of limited fiscal resources, he has exhibited remarkable resolve and professionalism in addressing the nation’s road issues.

“His track record of accomplishment in rehabilitating critical roadways is indicative of his unwavering commitment to the service of the Nigerian people.”

The group stressed that, despite limited fiscal resources and inherited challenges, Umahi has demonstrated professionalism and commitment to addressing the nation’s infrastructure deficits. Recent projects initiated by the minister include the Lagos-to-Sokoto Super Highway and the Lagos-to-Calabar Coastal Road, with portions of the latter expected to be completed by 2025.

“It is essential to recognize that Senator Umahi has not been deterred by the barrage of unfounded criticisms or the clamor of discontent. His recent undertakings, including the flagging-off of the Lagos-to-Sokoto Super Highway and the Lagos-to-Calabar Coastal Road projects, are profound indicators of his commitment to delivering on infrastructural promises,” the statement added.

“These projects aim to be completed within specified timeframes, with the first phase of the Lagos-to-Sokoto Super Highway expected to be concluded before 2027, and substantial components of the Lagos-to-Calabar Coastal Road targeted for completion by 2025.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasizes the organization’s gratitude to President Tinubu for retaining Senator Umahi in his critical role as Minister of Works. This decision represents a significant step in ensuring that the Southeast and, indeed, the whole of Nigeria benefit from effective governance and robust infrastructural development.”
The group warned against further attempts to undermine Umahi’s integrity and urged members of the House of Representatives to adopt a collaborative approach.

“We unequivocally stand against any further attempts to undermine Senator Umahi’s integrity or efficacy. We reaffirm our stance that such unfounded attacks will not be tolerated,” the group added.

“The commitment and professionalism demonstrated by Senator Umahi as a certified and practicing engineer are commendable. The Nigerian populace, particularly the Igbo nation, is confident that under his stewardship, the strategic revitalization of roads—not only limited to the high-profile projects but encompassing various other critical roadways—will be achieved.

“In light of these sentiments, we call upon the House of Representatives to approach their discussions with a spirit of respect and collaboration. The use of proper legislative channels to address grievances is essential; resorting to personal attacks and unwarranted criticism serves only to erode the foundations of constructive engagement.

“In closing, we urge all parties involved to focus on tangible solutions and collaborative efforts to further the greater good of the Nigerian populace, rather than indulging in divisive rhetoric.”
