The Delta State government has acquired 144,000 male condoms, 936 units of Implanon NXT, and 6,000 units of Sayana Press to enhance access to family planning services.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) procurement agent handed over the commodities to the state Ministry of Health for distribution across healthcare centres.

Receiving the items, Dr Philomena Okeowo, Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its support and called for continued collaboration to improve healthcare delivery.

Okeowo assured that the commodities, vital to reproductive health services, would benefit those seeking family planning. “The state government funded this procurement to safeguard the reproductive health rights of women and girls in Delta State,” she noted.

Dr Andrew Kirima, UNFPA Programme Coordinator in Cross River State, commended Delta’s commitment to family planning and highlighted the importance of fostering safe, affordable reproductive health services. “We encourage Delta State to continue mobilising resources for family planning commodities and their distribution to health facilities,” Kirima added, emphasising the goal of increasing domestic funding to reduce reliance on external sources.

State Director of Public Health Dr Tetsola Christian and Reproductive Health Coordinator Dr Weyinmi Francis confirmed that family planning services are available at primary healthcare centres across Delta.

They added that the new commodities would complement Federal Government contributions, and further procurements through UNFPA are planned to support family planning efforts statewide.
