Wigwe varsity VC charges new students to build foundations for future generations

The Vice Chancellor of Wigwe University, Rivers State, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, has advised the newly admitted students of the institution to be focused and lay a solid foundation that will foster Africa’s potential through knowledge and character.

Speaking at the maiden matriculation ceremony on Thursday at the institution’s campus in Isiokpo, Rivers State, the VC noted that the 120 pioneering students were spread across the College of Arts, Engineering, Management and Social Sciences, and the College of Science and Computing.

He charged them to build a foundation that will influence generations to come.

The Vice Chancellor reflected on his personal journey in bringing Wigwe University to fruition. He honoured the founder, late Dr. Herbert Wigwe’s memory with a moment of silence, acknowledging his dream of building an academic institution rooted in fearless pursuit and excellence.

The VC added, “The vision for Wigwe University is not merely about individual success but about shaping a future where Africa’s potential shines. We aim to create an environment that goes beyond knowledge, to nurturing moral courage, critical thinking, and the capacity to lead with empathy and integrity.”

Professor Al-Akaidi emphasised that the students’ educational journey at Wigwe University is about becoming transformative leaders who are fearless in the face of challenges and committed to creating societal change.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr. Julius Okojie, also emphasised the significance of the occasion, saying it will usher in a new dawn in the education sector.

He congratulated the matriculants and urged the Isiokpo community to nurture the young minds. Reflecting on the founder’s vision, he remarked, “The late Herbert Wigwe would be proud, declaring Wigwe University an Ivy League institution.”

Delivering the keynote address, the Emir of Kano State, Mohammed Sanusi, inspired students to live on the “right side of history” and persevere through life’s transient challenges.

Sanusi shared his philosophy of fearless ambition as the foundation of success, charging students to rise as change-makers who will shape Africa’s future. “My young students know that the refusal to succumb to fear is the secret of success in life,” he said.

The Special Guest of Honour, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, represented by Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chinedu Chukwuma, encouraged the students to set high standards, work diligently, and contribute positively to their communities, pledging the state’s support as they embark on this academic journey.

Tochi Wigwe, daughter of the late founder, delivered a heartfelt goodwill message to the matriculants, celebrating their courage and urging them to seize every opportunity.

Wigwe’s father, Pa Shyngle Wigwe, invoked blessings for the institution, its students, and their families. He prayed for the success, prosperity, and excellence of the matriculants, hoping the university would flourish and delight all within the next five years.

Dr. Mrs. Awoshika, a governing council member, led the closing prayer, after which the event concluded with the Nigerian National Anthem, followed by the Vice Chancellor’s procession alongside academic officials, students, and distinguished guests.

The matriculation featured a drama presentation by the Theatre Arts Department titled “Dreams Come True.” The performance depicted the inspiring story of a young man who, despite financial struggles, received a scholarship to Wigwe University, providing him with quality education, luxury accommodation, and fulfilling meals, highlighting the institution’s dedication to student well-being.
