The European Union (EU), in partnership with the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival (ENIFF), has launched an initiative to elevate African storytelling and empower emerging filmmakers to address social issues through impactful filmmaking.

This collaboration, curated by HD Film Studios, introduces the EU Short Film Competition and Filmmaking Impact Lab—an opportunity for participants to hone their skills, connect with global trends, and make a positive impact through film.

Celebrating its fifth edition, ENIFF continues to champion African narratives and foster emerging talent. Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of ENIFF, Ujuaku Akukwe, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, noting, “The impact this initiative will create for emerging filmmakers in southeast Nigeria is profound. Beyond learning advanced techniques, participants stand to gain financial empowerment with the prize money, further motivating them to use storytelling as a means of change and cultural expression.”

The EU short film competition invites aspiring filmmakers to produce a short film between 1 to 3 minutes, offering them a platform to explore socially relevant themes that resonate within their communities. The Filmmaking Impact Lab complements this competition by offering immersive masterclasses focused on impact filmmaking. Participants will gain insights into using film as a tool for societal change and will have the unique opportunity to submit a documentary synopsis, competing for a grant dedicated to short-form documentary work.

Six entries from the Short Film Competition will be selected for screening at ENIFF 2024, scheduled for November 27-30 in Enugu. During the festival, winners will be announced, with a cash prize of one million naira each awarded by the EU. This collaboration reflects the EU’s commitment to fostering innovation, creativity, and social awareness within the Nigerian film industry.

The EU-ENIFF partnership highlights the role of storytelling in fostering dialogue, addressing social issues, and amplifying the voices within African cinema. Emerging filmmakers eager to make a meaningful impact are encouraged to take part in this unique and empowering opportunity.
