The Lagos State government has unveiled plans to collaborate with Oando Clean Energy to address the challenge of methane emissions from dumpsites and landfills across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by Oando Clean Energy to Alausa. Wahab emphasised that the partnership would not only reduce environmental hazards but also boost the state’s economy by creating jobs and converting solid, industrial, and toxic waste into valuable resources.

He noted that Lagos generates over 13,000 tonnes of waste daily and that improper waste management poses severe environmental risks.

Wahab said the partnership aims to produce energy and alternative fuel through biochemical processes, adding that the state is committed to reducing carbon emissions while turning waste into a resource.

“The crusade for a sustainable environment is crucial,” he said. “Through consultations and collaborations with organisations like Oando Clean Energy, we are demonstrating that waste is not a waste but a resource.

Oando Clean Energy’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ademola Ogunbanjo, expressed the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy solutions.

He explained that the organisation employs advanced research, feasibility studies, and technology to develop waste-to-energy systems tailored to specific waste types, driving economic growth.

Ogunbanjo also highlighted the involvement of experts from China’s Beijing GeoEnviron Engineering and Technology, who have successfully implemented similar projects.

Speaking for the Chinese delegation, Yu Jiajia, founder of Regal Lane Holdings Limited, lauded the partnership’s potential and pledged full cooperation.

Officials present at the meeting included Dr Omobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary of Environmental Services, and Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority, among others.
