‘I don’t have to perform in Nigeria’ – Davido slams critics over comment on economy

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has claimed that there are moves to cancel his December show following his controversial remarks about Nigeria’s economy.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, November 27, 2024, the singer dismissed the backlash, declaring himself one of Nigeria’s ‘real ambassadors.’

“Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview… loooool. I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” Davido posted,

This development comes after his appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, where he advised Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria, citing poor leadership, rising oil prices, and a weak exchange rate.

“The economy is in shambles,” he said, adding that it’s ironic for an oil-producing country like Nigeria to pay more for fuel than oil-importing nations.

Davido’s remarks sparked mixed reactions, with some critics accusing him of damaging Nigeria’s image on an international stage.

TVC presenter Akashat Ny’mat argued that while his statements hold some truth, they were ill-timed, especially when the government is seeking foreign investors.

“When a prominent figure like Davido says this, he is essentially telling them not to come,” she said.

Davido stood his ground, maintaining that he’s representing Nigeria in his own way. “You all are mad ‘cus we the real ambassadors,” he wrote, adding that he was pleased with how his accent sounded during the podcast.
