The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Africa director-elect, Faustine Ndugulile, has reportedly passed away on Wednesday morning.

Ndugulile was a 55-year-old medical doctor and lawmaker from Tanzania and was reportedly undergoing treatment in India for an undisclosed illness

He was elected to the position in August and was set to start his new role in February 2025.

WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed his condolences on X, saying, “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Faustine Ndugulile, WHO Africa Regional Director-elect,

“My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and the parliament and people of Tanzania.”

While Walter Mulombo, WHO Nigeria country representative, who also expressed condolences via X, described Ndugulile’s death as “sad news for Africa and the world.”

“We didn’t need this now. We are devastated. Sad news for Africa and the world. We give glory to Almighty God because only him knows why,” Mulombo stated.

“We thank God for his life and the inspiration he brought, albeit for a very short time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
