The Edo State Government has revealed why Governor Monday Okpebholo decided to suspend the free bus initiative for residents.

Okpebholo’s spokesman Fred Itua gave the reason for the suspension in a statement on Wednesday evening, adding that the governor is still being briefed.

“The governor is being briefed on issues surrounding the operation of the state-owned Edo City Transport Service, operators of the free bus services,” Itua said.

“For now, the free bus services have been placed on hold. A new decision by the governor will be communicated to the general public.”

The directive to suspend the initiative came barely 24 hours after the governor had approved complimentary transportation services for residents through the Edo city transport service, describing it as one of the cornerstones of his administration.

Itua, announcing the initiative said in a statement that the service would cover the Benin metropolis and the three senatorial districts of Edo State.

However, in another statement late Wednesday, the spokesman said the earlier announcement should be “disregarded”.
