FCTA clamps down on street begging, ‘one chance’ operators in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has intensified security measures for the festive season, arresting seven street beggars and cracking down on “one chance” robbery operators in Abuja.
Director of FCTA’s Security Services, Mr Adamu Gwary, represented by the Secretary of the Command and Control Centre, Dr Peter Olumuji, revealed this after a special operation launched on Monday.
The beggars have been handed over to the Social Development Secretariat for profiling. A suspect impersonating a police officer was also arrested, with a locally fabricated knife found in his vehicle. He has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Gwary explained that the operation supports ongoing efforts by the police and other security agencies to eliminate criminals posing as commercial drivers.
The FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) impounded several vehicles suspected to be used for “one chance” operations. Gwary stressed the importance of vigilance during the festive period, urging commuters to share vehicle details with family or friends, especially at night.
Head of DRTS Operations, Mrs Deborah Osho, stated that the focus remains on evening and night operations when criminals often target unsuspecting passengers. Over 30 vehicles were impounded on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Principal Social Welfare Officer, Mr Mustapha Yunusa, described the operation as successful, citing a significant reduction in street begging around the National Mosque. He outlined plans to rehabilitate trainable beggars and reunite others with their families.
