Olanipekun backs six-year single term for president
Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Wole Olanipekun (SAN), at the weekend, supported the call for a single six-year term for President, Vice President, governors and deputy governors to achieve political stability, equity and accelerated development of the country.
Olanipekun stated this in his country home, Ikere Ekiti, during the fifth empowerment programme and 28th scholarship award scheme organised by the Wole Olanipekun Foundation (WOF).
The legal icon said that the proposition had long been on the ground and was initiated by the NBA when he was the President of the association to promote and foster unity in the country.
He regretted that the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, rejected the idea at that time.
Olanipekun said that the scholarship scheme had initially produced 3,019 beneficiaries and 800 in the Wole Olanipekun Foundation, as well as the empowerment programme with 150 and 250 beneficiaries in 2024 respectively.
“The scholarship programme covers secondary education level, university undergraduates, and Law School candidates,” Olanipekun added
In his remarks at the event, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, lauded Olanipekun for the support and benefits given to the people, especially the vulnerable in the state, on education and employment drive.
The governor, therefore, urged other well-meaning Ekiti State indigenes to emulate the exemplary roles of Olanipekun to move the state forward.
Oyebanji, who appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to spare Ekiti State from the proposed industrial action planned to begin today, December 2, 2024, in the states where payment of the N70,000 minimum wage has not started, said that all arrangements had been concluded to commence the minimum wage payment as agreed by the labour unions.
The traditional monarch of the community, Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba AdejimiAlagbado, described the legal icon “as an outstanding and distinguished leader of the kingdom.”
The monarch, however, urged youths to shun social vices.
