A lawyer to Nigerian musician Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, has demanded that his client be granted bail after spending one week in police detention.

Darlington’s lawyer, Stan Alieke, made the demand on Wednesday in a post he shared on his official Instagram account, adding that his client is entitled to bail.

“Today marks exactly one week since my client, Mr. Darlington Achakpo, also known as Speed Darlington, was re-arrested and detained by the Nigerian Police Force,” Alieke wrote.

“He has been in custody ever since. The police should not violate his constitutional rights while purportedly enforcing someone else’s rights. He is entitled to bail and should be granted the same.”

The police have allegedly kept Speed Darlington, also known as “Akpi,” in their custody for one week over a complaint made by fellow musician, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known as Burna Boy.

This is the second time in 2024 that Burna Boy has called for the arrest of Speed Darlington, having done so a few months ago for allegedly cyberstalking him.

Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju confirmed in a post on his social media handle that Burna Boy was behind last Tuesday’s arrest of his client, Darlington, in Owerri, Imo State.

“Burna Boy behind harassment of Speed Darlington by the police. This is someone who has been singing against oppression and forming junior Fela, now oppressing Akpi,” Adeyanju wrote.

“Our client, Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI, has been arrested by the Nigerian police in Owerri at his show upon return to Nigeria.”
