Secondary school teacher demoted for disrespecting NYSC uniform

NYSC, Kwara

The Kwara State government has demoted a secondary school teacher, Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, by two grades following her assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member last week.

The state government also announced the teacher’s transfer from Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, to an undisclosed location as part of measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

This decision followed the findings of a panel chaired by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the chairman of the state Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar.

The panel found Fatimoh guilty of “fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity represented by the NYSC uniform.”

In a joint statement, the officials said: “Her behaviour contravenes public service rules, and she has therefore been demoted by two-grade levels. The teacher is also to be transferred out of her current school and undergo counselling sessions.”

The state government expressed regret over the teacher’s actions, reassuring the NYSC management that such incidents would not recur. “The development does not represent the people of the state,” the statement read.

Teachers in the state were urged to remain law-abiding and strictly adhere to civil service procedures. The government reiterated its commitment to prioritising training on teaching ethics and service standards.
