The staff unions of Lagos State University (LASU) have declared an indefinite strike, effective from the close of work on December 6, 2024.

This action comes after the Lagos State Government failed to meet the demands outlined in the reports of government-established committees, which were expected to be implemented by the set deadline.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of LASU’s staff unions, which represents various categories of university employees, communicated their decision in a letter to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, dated November 19, 2024.

The unions had previously warned that they would resort to a full strike if their demands were not addressed by the government by December 6.

In the letter, the union noted that the state government has long taken its members for granted, pointing out that the government seems not to be responsive or sensitive to the welfare of its members.

The letter read, “In consonance with the decision of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions in its letter to the Governor, dated 19th November 2024, in which we reiterated that if the State Government failed to accede to our demands regarding the implementation of the reports of the Committees put in place by Government by the 6th of December, 2024.

“We hereby notify you and the management of the university that all the staff unions have declared a total and indefinite strike action, effective from the 6th December, 2024, after the day’s close of work.

“Much as we appreciate your efforts at resolving this matter amicably, we note that the government has long taken our members for granted, as they seem not to be responsive or sensitive to the welfare of our members.”
