The Yobe State government has inaugurated an Erosion Control and Climate Change (YECCC) council to mitigate carbon emission and environmental degradation.

The council, according to Governor Mai Mala Buni will develop a policy on mitigating climate change, engage in research and assessment, erosion control and implement various initiatives.

Inaugurating the members in Damaturu, the governor said the council led by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, comprises commissioners of related ministries and experts on erosion control and environmental conservation.

“This development is a significant step in addressing climate change, erosion and other environmental degradation affecting the state for over two decades,” he said.

The council would also source for climate financing, capacity building and carbon market, including pubic engagement, monitoring and evaluation on clean environment.

The task includes helping the state to overcome the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, particularly desertification in local council areas.

The governor further urged stakeholders to support and collaborate with the council in ensuring the implementation of its clean environment initiatives.
